Complete Netting Guide

Everything you need to know about choosing, installing, and maintaining agricultural netting
Types of Agricultural Netting - Which Do You Need?

We offer three specialised netting solutions for different protection needs. Bird Netting prevents bird damage to fruit crops, berries, and vegetables using diamond mesh (5mm, 15mm, 16mm) or Crossweave (70gsm). It's ideal for orchards, vineyards, and berry farms, providing a physical barrier that stops birds without harming them.

Insect & Fruit Fly Netting excludes pests using fine mesh (25x50 or 35x55 thread count) in 115gsm weight. Perfect for organic growers and high-value crops, it offers chemical-free pest control for tomatoes, capsicums, citrus, and stone fruit.

Hail Protection Netting shields crops from severe weather using impact-resistant Crossweave 70gsm that also provides bird protection. Best for hail-prone regions and commercial orchards growing apples, stone fruit, grapes, and high-value vegetables.

Bird Netting - Protection Guide

Our Diamond Mesh Bird Netting comes in 5mm (wildlife safe), 15mm, or 16mm sizes, made from high-density polyethylene with UV stabilisation for 5+ years lifespan. Available in black (less visible) or white (safer for birds). The Crossweave 70gsm option features double-layer construction that prevents branch snagging and stops even small birds—ideal for delicate fruit trees.

Installation is flexible: use the drape method for simple coverage, frame systems for permanent structures, or complete net houses for full enclosure. Common applications include protecting stone fruit, cherries, grapes, and berries from parrots, cockatoos, pigeons, silvereyes, and starlings.

When measuring, add 20-30% extra for draping and securing. For trees, measure from ground to canopy top and add 1-2 metres. Install 2-3 weeks before fruit ripens, ensure netting doesn't touch fruit, check regularly for tears, and remove during off-season to extend lifespan.

Insect & Fruit Fly Netting

Our commercial insect netting offers chemical-free pest control in 25x50 (standard) or 35x55 (fine mesh) thread counts, weighing 115gsm for balanced strength and airflow. The white UV-stabilised material reflects heat and reduces internal temperatures by 2-5°C, making it ideal for Australian conditions. Available in rolls from 3.1m x 20m to 2m x 200m for broadacre applications.

It effectively excludes fruit flies, moths, beetles, aphids, leaf miners, thrips, and whiteflies—perfect for protecting tomatoes, capsicums, citrus, stone fruit, berries, and vegetables. For organic growers, it eliminates pesticide needs, maintains certification, protects beneficial insects, and leaves no chemical residues.

Installation options include floating row covers, low tunnels over hoops, permanent net houses, or individual tree enclosures. Inspect weekly for tears, repair immediately, and clean annually with water. Expected lifespan is 3-5 years with proper care. Hail Protection Netting

Our Crossweave Hail Netting (70gsm) features double-layer construction for maximum impact resistance while maintaining 80-85% light transmission. With a 5-8 year lifespan and dual-use protection against both hail and birds, it prevents crop loss, bruising, and market value reduction. A single hail event can destroy an entire crop—this netting typically pays for itself after preventing just one occurrence.

Ideal for high-risk regions including Southern Queensland, Northern NSW, Victorian High Country, Adelaide Hills, and Perth Hills. Perfect for protecting apples, pears, stone fruit, wine grapes, berries, and high-value vegetables in commercial orchards, vineyards, and nurseries.

Installation requires proper engineering for wind loads, snow loads, and impact resistance. We recommend professional installation for commercial orchards over 1 hectare, permanent installations, or operations requiring engineering certification. Inspect after weather events, repair tears immediately, remove accumulated debris, and retension every 2-3 years.

Installation Guide

DIY Installation is suitable for small to medium areas (under 500m²) with 2-3 helpers. For the drape method, simply measure your area (add 20-30% extra), trim branches that could snag, unroll the net, drape over crops, and secure the base with pegs or pickets every 2-3 metres. For permanent frame installations, install posts 4-6m apart, add cross-beams, attach netting with cable ties every 30-50cm, and seal the bottom.

Professional Installation is recommended for areas over 500m², hail protection systems, commercial operations, or difficult terrain. Services include site assessment, engineering certification if required, all materials and equipment, experienced crew, and installation warranty. Timeframes range from 2-4 hours for small DIY projects to 2-4 weeks for commercial orchards.

Best installation timing: Bird netting 2-3 weeks before fruit ripens, insect netting at transplanting, hail protection during dormant season. Common mistakes to avoid include ordering insufficient netting, not securing the base properly, allowing net to touch fruit, over-tensioning, and installing during windy conditions. How to Calculate Size & Choose Mesh

Calculating Netting Size: For trees, use formula: (Height x 2) + Width + 2m extra. Example: 3m tall tree, 4m wide = 12m net needed. For flat areas, measure length and width, then add 1-2m to each dimension. For permanent structures, measure post-to-post distances, calculate each panel separately, and add 20% for draping plus 30-50cm overlap at joins. Always round up to the next standard size.

Choosing Bird Netting Mesh: 5mm is wildlife safe for small birds/bats, 15-16mm is standard for parrots, cockatoos, pigeons (most economical), and Crossweave 70gsm is premium for small bird protection plus hail resistance. Insect Netting: 25x50 thread count blocks fruit flies, moths, and beetles; 35x55 fine mesh blocks thrips and aphids. For colour, white is safer for birds and reflects heat (cooler), while black is less visible.

Roll Sizes: Small projects 2m x 10-20m, medium 3.1m x 20-50m, large/commercial 3.1m x 100m or 2m x 200m. Larger rolls offer better value per square metre. Contact us with photos and dimensions for personalised recommendations.

Maintenance & Care

Proper maintenance can double the lifespan of your agricultural netting. Inspect weekly during use for tears and pest entry points, and check immediately after storms for damage. Clean annually by hosing down with low-pressure water, and repair small tears promptly using UV-resistant thread or self-adhesive patches.

For seasonal storage, remove all debris, clean and dry completely, then fold loosely or roll onto a tube. Store in a cool, dry, rodent-free location away from direct sunlight. Expected lifespan is 5-8 years for bird/hail nets and 3-5 years for insect nets with proper care.

Signs it's time to replace include brittleness, extensive UV damage with colour fading, multiple large tears requiring constant repair, or loss of strength where the net stretches excessively. To maximise lifespan, remove and store nets during off-season, prevent branch contact, maintain proper tension, and repair damage immediately.
