About Opinel

Opinel is a French knife maker founded in 1890 in Savoie, known worldwide for folding knives that combine tradition, simplicity, and everyday reliability. Gardeners and small-scale growers rely on Opinel for tools that slip into a pocket, stay sharp through regular use, and feel natural in the hand over long harvest sessions.

Pruning, Grafting & Specialty Tools

For precise cuts, choose the N°08 Pruning and Grafting Knife—a sharp stainless blade and comfortable beech handle for delicate budding and vine work. The larger N°10 Billhook suits pruning shrubs, trimming canes, and heavier harvesting jobs where extra blade length helps.

Mushroom knives with curved blades and brushes support clean foraging cuts, while folding garden saws tackle stubborn branches when secateurs are not enough. Specialty models such as scoring and chestnut knives cover niche kitchen-garden and orchard tasks.

Virobloc, Steel & Care

Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc safety ring locks the blade open for safe use and closed for transport—fitted to all folding knives from N°06 upward.

Most garden models use Sandvik stainless steel optimised for corrosion resistance and edge retention, so blades stand up to contact with soil, moisture, and harvest residues without demanding special maintenance under normal use. Beech handles are varnished to resist dirt and humidity; wipe blades dry after use and hone occasionally to keep the edge keen.
